Connection Between the Bible and Addiction
May 25, 2022
Addiction is not only a physical problem but a disease that affects the mind and the spirit. Addictive substances drag us further away from the light of the Lord, but God has provided us with resources to help us through trying times, including recovering from substance abuse and addiction. This resource is the Bible.
Below is more information about the connection between the Bible and addiction, and how you can use the teachings in the Bible as a source of comfort and motivation for the journey ahead. Being able to incorporate the healing practices of the Bible into daily recovery is just one of the benefits of Faith-Based recovery.
Quotes About Addiction in the Bible
The Bible has many things to say about overcoming struggles in our lives, which include addiction. Below are a few Bible verses that touch on the topic and how God can provide salvation and healing:
“So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.” Thessalonians 5:6-8
“For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life— comes not from the Father but the world.” John 2:16
“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:18-20
It is through faith that all things are possible—including overcoming addiction. By accepting the Lord and His teachings, you begin the path to recovery. The path can be difficult to navigate on your own, though. Northbound Treatment Center offers faith-based rehabilitation, known as Christian Drug Rehab, that provides patients with the physical, mental, and spiritual support they need to safely overcome their addiction and reconnect with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Some of the benefits of a faith-based rehabilitation center include:
- A wonderful medical staff made up of Christians
- A peaceful and serene environment
- Medical and spiritual healing
- Bible study
- A community of Christians looking to reconnect with the Lord
What to Look for in a Christian Drug Rehab Near You
You may find that there are a few Christian drug rehab centers in your area. If so, there are a few things you’ll want to consider when choosing the right one to meet your needs. Below are some of these considerations:
- Focus on Christianity and the Bible
- A Staff of Christians
- Insurance Coverage
- Detox services
Forms of Treatment
At our Christian drug rehab center, we offer several levels of care that cater directly to each patient’s needs. Christian Drug Rehab offers both inpatient (residential) and outpatient treatment. But what is the difference? And what are the benefits?
Inpatient (residential) treatment is for patients that require a higher level of care. This form of treatment helps with adherence to the program and to ensure the safety of the patient. With inpatient treatment, the patient resides at the facility for the duration of their treatment.
Outpatient treatment is for patients that require a lower level of care. With this form of treatment, the patient resides at home and visits the treatment facility multiple times throughout the week for a few hours at a time. During these visits, they are taught the same skills and receive the same therapy residential patients receive.
Both forms of treatment involve therapy, skill development, distress tolerance, and other tools and techniques that help patients on their journey of sobriety.

Christian Support Groups Near You
Support groups are an excellent supplement to a drug and alcohol treatment program. At Northbound Treatment Center, we recommend patients work the 12 steps and join a recovery program based on spirituality. Many recovery programs are built around a higher power and for Christians, this is our Lord Jesus Christ.
One of the advantages of support groups is the ability to connect with others and become part of a community. It is through building a community that people in recovery can better get and stay sober. There is also the opportunity to help others with their recovery.
Many support groups are anonymous, which is very helpful for those that are worried about sharing their struggles with others.
As a Christian, you may want to consider Celebrate Recovery. This program involves 12-step work along with other helpful techniques. Unlike other support groups, Celebrate Recovery is specifically designed to help those of the Christian faith to develop the skills they need for ongoing recovery.
What is Detox?
Detox (detoxification) is the process of the body cleansing itself of drugs and/or alcohol. For those looking to get clean from substance abuse, this step is unavoidable. For some, detoxification is quick and straightforward. For others, it can take a long time and can be quite difficult.
Common substances that require detoxification include:
It is extremely important to seek the help of medical professionals when detoxing from addictive substances. Withdrawal symptoms can be anywhere from mild to severe. If not managed, they can even be deadly! Make sure you check into a medical facility or treatment center that offers medical detox services when you stop the use of drugs and/or alcohol for your own safety. Do not try to quit “cold turkey,” and consult with medical professionals to ensure your recovery is safe and effective.
