People often talk about having boundaries, especially with regard to relationships, but what are boundaries actually? Boundaries are healthy limits people place between themselves and others in interpersonal relationships in order to have more control over their own lives and healthier lives in general.
Those with drug and alcohol addiction often have poor boundaries and this can negatively manifest into their lives in a variety of ways including; not knowing how or when to say “no,” putting other’s needs before their own, having obsessive thoughts about another person, allowing others to control their actions, giving too much or taking too much from others and having either high expectations of others or low expectations of themselves. Any one of these behaviors can impact overall well-being and ability to become spiritually mature and free the way God intended. It is in this light that our Christian drug rehab has created a program to help clients with their boundaries. This core component to our curriculum can do wonders for improving relationships and self-esteem. Without self-esteem, healthy relationships and boundaries, the person addicted to drugs and alcohol often experiences drama in their lives – which turns into manufactured excuses to pick up a drink or a drug.
The Boundaries workshop is part of our Christian addiction treatment program and is modeled on Dr. Henry Cloud and John Townsend’s book Boundaries: When to Say YES, When to Say NO, To Take Control of Your Life. The workshop helps clients navigate the often uncharted territory of distinguishing God’s will and other’s will from their own, how to have strong and clear boundaries while simultaneously loving another, and how to let go of the guilt and shame of setting a boundary when it incites strong reactions in loved ones who aren’t used to one’s newfound sense of self respect. Because of the multifaceted ways in which proper boundaries can improve one’s life in early recovery, we though it was essential to establish this program at our Christian drug rehab program. Here are just a few of the benefits that our clients glean from our Boundaries Workshop:
