Grief can feel like the ground has been pulled out from under you. Whether you’re mourning the loss of a loved one, a broken relationship, or simply the life you once had, grief touches your whole being. For some people, that overwhelming pain can lead to alcoholism, drug use, or other ways of coping that feel impossible to escape.
But Scripture reminds us: you are not alone in your sorrow. If you’re searching for comfort, these Bible verses for grief can help carry you through. And if you’re looking for a place where faith and healing meet, the LINKS Christian track at Northbound Treatment can walk alongside you.

What Does the Bible Say About Grief?
“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
“He is the One who heals the brokenhearted and who binds up their wounds.” – Psalm 147:3
Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, wept when His friend died (John 11:35). Scripture doesn’t dismiss grief—it acknowledges its depth and offers hope beyond the pain.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
Whether your grief led to substance use or simply feels too heavy to bear, the Bible invites children of God to find comfort in His love and the promise of eternal life through Christ Jesus.
Bible Verses For Grief To Comfort Your Heart
Here are a few verses to return to when you’re overwhelmed by sorrow:
1. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying nor pain anymore, for the old order of things has passed away.” – Revelation 21:4
In heaven, sorrow will be erased for God’s people. This verse reminds us that what feels like forever now is actually just a moment compared to the joy to come for believers.
2. “We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:14
Grief hurts. But in Christ, death is not the end. If you’ve lost someone you love and their faith and trust were in Jesus Christ, this promise is for you.
3. “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” – 2 Corinthians 4:17
This doesn’t minimize your grief. Instead, it points to the eternal glory that sorrow cannot erase.
4. “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” – Psalm 73:26
Even when you have nothing left, God remains your strength and your forever hope.
5. “…that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved… for ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'” — Romans 10:9,13
For those of us who have heard the Gospel and responded to it, we know that we have salvation.
When Grief Often Leads to Addiction
It’s no surprise that many turn to alcohol or drugs after loss. Substance use can feel to many like the only way to numb unbearable pain. But while alcohol and drugs promise relief, they only deepen the wound.
At LINKS, we understand that behind many addiction stories is a story of grief. That’s why our faith-based recovery program focuses on healing both your body and soul.

Let me find peace not in forgetting, but in trusting that You are near and that no more death is the promise waiting for me. Amen.”

FAQs About Faith, Grief, and Recovery
Will my grief really end one day, according to the Bible?
Yes. The Bible promises that in heaven, God will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning. In the book of Revelation, we’re reminded that sorrow will not last forever for those who trust in Christ Jesus—the Lord forever reigns, and healing is promised to all who believe. But your faith and trust must be in Jesus Christ.
How does the Holy Spirit help with grief?
The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter for a reason. When you’re overwhelmed by grief, the Holy Spirit can bring peace, strength, and hope that transcends understanding, helping you move through sorrow without being consumed by it.
Can I find rest even when I’m grieving?
Absolutely. Jesus Christ says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and you will find rest for your souls.” Whether you’re grieving a person, a loss, or a life you once had, His presence can offer believers true peace.
Does grief affect all people?
Grief is universal—across all the earth, people mourn. Loss is a shared human experience, but hope is too. The Bible assures us that God is sovereign and is in control of all things, offering comfort to anyone who puts all their faith, trust, and hope in Christ Jesus.
Does the Bible talk about suffering as part of life?
The following has been reprinted from a Living Waters brochure Why Does God Allow Suffering?:
‘So if you are a Christian, whatever terrible lion’s den in which you find yourself, know that God has allowed it for a purpose, and that nothing, not even death, can separate you from His amazing love. Remember the admonition to “trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5, emphasis added). Those who do that can say with Job, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15). Let your trust in God banish any hopelessness, despair or fear of the future. He knows what He’s doing.
‘If you are not a Christian and you’ve irreverently questioned God in your heart or you’ve let life’s pains make you bitter, please don’t make the mistake of shaking your fist in anger at the One who gave you your life. Instead, raise both hands in surrender to His perfect will. You will never regret doing that… not in a million years.’
